We picture overnight transformations, instant motivation, or one life-changing moment that suddenly fixes everything.

But real growth doesn’t work that way.

True lasting change is built through small daily decisions repeated consistently over time.

The habits we practice every day eventually shape our mindsets, our confidence, our discipline, and our futures.

This is why why small daily wins matter more than most people realize.

Why People Ignore Small Wins

One of the biggest mistakes people make during personal growth or recovery is believing that only “big” accomplishments count.

They think:

  • If I didn’t completely change my life today, it doesn’t matter.

  • If I’m not perfect, I’m failing.

  • If progress is slow, it’s not working.

This mindset causes people to overlook the importance of consistency.

In reality, the small things are often the foundation for the big things.

Getting out of bed on time.
Going for a walk.
Making it through a stressful day sober.
Having one honest conversation.
Writing in a journal.
Choosing not to quit.

These moments may seem small individually, but repeated over weeks and months, they create momentum.

Confidence Is Built Through Action

Nobody changes their life in one day.

How to Stay Sober when Life Gets Stressful

Stress is the undeniably the biggest trigger for relapse. From familial obligations, soaring gas prices, relationship struggles, you name it - stress comes at us from all angles. When life feels overwhelming, our minds naturally look for relief, escape, or comfort. For many people in recovery, substances became the way to cope with stress, anxiety, loneliness, pressure, or emotional pain. That’s why stressful seasons are especially dangerous during sobriety.

The truth: Stress itself is unavoidable AND manageable - it’s about learning how to handle stress in healthier ways without returning to destructive behaviors.

At 10th Round Coaching, I work with men throughout California who are learning how to stay accountable, emotionally resilient, and committed to a long-term recovery program even when life gets difficult.

Recovery is about progress, not perfection. It’s about developing the tools, structure, and mindset needed to keep moving forward, so we can recover all that we’ve lost, and recover from the wounds we have acquired before, and during active addiction.

Why Stress Is a Major Relapse Trigger

Stress affects both the mind and body. When stress levels rise, the brain naturally searches for something that provides relief or comfort. As someone with a history of addiction myself, old thought patterns can quickly return during those tough moments.

If I asked anybody in recovery if they’d like to use a substance, burn it all down and rebuild it all again once we have no resources left, the answer is almost always NO.

People don’t relapse because they want to go backward. They relapse because they feel emotionally exhausted, overwhelmed, isolated, or mentally defeated. Stress lowers emotional resilience and increases impulsive behavior.

Common stress-related relapse triggers:

  • Financial pressure

  • Relationship conflict

  • Loneliness or isolation

  • Work burnout

  • Anxiety about the future

  • Depression or hopelessness

  • Lack of sleep

  • Feeling emotionally numb

  • Major life changes

One of the most important parts of recovery is learning to recognize stress before we reach our boiling point.

Learn to Identify Your Personal Triggers

Every person’s triggers are different. Some people struggle most with loneliness. Others struggle with anger, boredom, shame, or anxiety. hell, even positive emotions can bring about stress. Understanding our personal triggers is essential for protecting our sobriety.

Ask yourself:

  • What situations make me feel emotionally overwhelmed?

  • What emotions make me want to escape?

  • What environments increase temptation?

  • What habits usually happen before I start struggling mentally?

Self-awareness creates opportunity for intervention. When you can recognize warning signs early, you can take action before stress turns into relapse.

Many of us struggle because we ignore emotional stress until it builds up to unhealthy levels. Suppressing emotions does not make them disappear. It usually makes them stronger over time.

Build Healthy Daily Structure

One of the best ways to stay sober during stressful times is to create consistent daily routines. Chaos often fuels relapse, while structure creates stability.

Healthy routines help regulate emotions, reduce anxiety, and improve mental clarity. Even small habits can make a major difference over time.

Important recovery-focused habits include:

  • Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule

  • Exercising regularly

  • Eating healthy meals

  • Staying hydrated

  • Spending time outdoors

  • Practicing mindfulness or prayer

  • Attending recovery meetings

  • Limiting negative influences

  • Staying connected to supportive people

Consistency matters more than perfection. Small daily actions build emotional resilience over time.

Don’t Isolate Yourself

Isolation is one of the most dangerous patterns in addiction recovery. When stress increases, many people withdraw from others and try to handle everything alone. Unfortunately, isolation often creates the perfect environment for negative thinking, spiraling, and relapse.

Human connection is essential during recovery. Having people we trust who can encourage us, hold us accountable, and listen without judgment can make a huge difference during times of real stress.

This might include:

  • Friends

  • Family members

  • Sponsors

  • Recovery groups

  • Coaches

  • Therapists

  • Faith communities

Asking for support is not weakness, its the opposite. Reaching out takes strength and self-awareness.

Many men are taught to suppress emotions and solve problems alone. Over time, this mindset can become destructive. Recovery requires learning how to be honest, vulnerable, and willing to accept help.

Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

One of the biggest mistakes people make in recovery is expecting themselves to be perfect. Life will still have difficult days. You will still experience stress, frustration, disappointment, and emotional struggles. Sobriety does not eliminate life’s challenges - It allows us to face them head on and experience the joy that comes with overcoming adversity.

Recovery is about progress, growth, and resilience. A bad day doesn’t erase our progress. Feeling stress does not mean you are failing. The goal is not to numb out, but to develop healthier coping strategies.

When stressful situations happen:

  • Pause before reacting impulsively

  • Reach out for support

  • Focus on what you can control

  • Take care of your physical health

  • Remember why sobriety matters to you

  • Stay connected to your long-term goals

The ability to stay grounded during stressful moments is a skill that strengthens with practice, and it will take some practice.

Accountability Creates Stability

Accountability is one of the most powerful tools in recovery. When people feel disconnected or unsupported, unhealthy habits can slowly return. Accountability helps create consistency, honesty, and direction.

This is one reason coaching can be so valuable during recovery. Having someone who regularly checks in, challenges negative thinking, and helps you stay focused on your goals can provide stability during stressful seasons of life.

Speaking from experience - Addiction sucks, and Relapse is even worse.

What many don’t tell you: From rehab, to therapy, to all the tools we can learn, at the end of the day recovery is a commitment. A commitment that I will not drink or use NO MATTER WHAT. Sometimes at the end of the real tough days, none of the tools work. Nobody picks up the phone, and it’s just you and a decision to be made.

I can assure you this: there is not one experience in recovery that will boost your confidence more than waking up in the morning, knowing that yesterday was the worst day of your life AND you didnt drink, you didnt get high. You stuck to your guns, and proved to yourself that even in the worst moments, sobriety is possible.

Why men struggle to open up emotionally

For a lot of us, opening up emotionally can feel uncomfortable, unfamiliar, or even impossible. Conversations about fear, insecurity, loneliness, anxiety, or emotional pain are often avoided only to be hidden behind humor, distraction, anger, work, you name it. Every person is different and there is a growing pattern in modern society that explains why so many men struggle to express what we are truly feeling.

Honestly, its clear that most men were never taught how to process emotions in a healthy way, if at all.

From an early age, many boys hear messages like:

“Man up.”

“Don’t cry.”

“Be strong.”

“Dont be a little _____.” ( sorry)

Over time, these messages frame our core beliefs. We tend to grow up thinking vulnerability equals weakness and emotional expression makes us less respected, masculine, or capable. Instead of learning how to communicate emotional struggles, we learn how to suppress.

At first, emotional suppression may seem harmless. And even now, I might convince myself I’m simply being strong, disciplined, or independent. But over time, buried emotions rarely disappear. They often show up in different ways — stress, anger, emotional numbness, isolation, addiction, anxiety, relationship struggles, or burnout.

Judgement is one of the biggest reasons we struggle emotionally.

Worrying that if we open up, we will be viewed differently by friends, partners, coworkers, or even family members. We fear looking weak, needy, unstable, or incapable. In a world where men often feel pressure to appear confident and in control, vulnerability can feel risky.

This fear creates emotional isolation.

A man may be surrounded by people and still feel completely alone because nobody truly knows what we’re carrying internally. We might talk about work, sports, goals, or everyday life while avoiding deeper conversations entirely. Over time, this emotional distance can damage relationships and create a sense of disconnection from others and even from ourselves.

Social media hasn’t helped with this phenomenon too much either.

Modern culture constantly promotes images of success, confidence, status, and perfection. Many men compare themselves to unrealistic standards and feel pressure to maintain appearances instead of being honest about their struggles. Online, you see everyone’s greatest hits only because people typically present polished versions of their lives while hiding insecurity, stress, loneliness, or emotional pain - pushing us further towards the idea that we should act like we’ve got it all together too, when truly, not many do.

As a result, many of us begin to believe we are the only ones struggling.

Another key factor is that many men lack safe environments for emotional honesty. Deep conversations between men are less common than surface interaction. Instead of talking openly about mental health, fear, failure, or emotions, many friendships stay centered around activities, jokes, or distractions.

This doesn’t mean men don’t want connection. In almost all cases, we deeply do, it’s just that years of emotional conditioning make vulnerability feel unnatural and even unsafe.

The problem: Emotional suppression comes with consequences.

When emotions are constantly ignored long enough, they inevitably build internally until they come out in unhealthy ways. Some men become emotionally detached. Others turn to substances, isolation, overworking, anger, or destructive habits to cope. Many struggle silently for years without realizing how much emotional weight they are carrying.

(Think holding a beach ball down under water. At some point, your arms will get tired, and the ball will fly back up to surface. And the deeper you hold it, the further it will fly into the air, if not smack you in the face.)

Mental health among men has become an increasingly important conversation because of this reality. Anxiety, depression, burnout, and loneliness are affecting countless men who outwardly appear successful, strong, or composed. The inability to open up emotionally does not eliminate pain — it only hides it temporarily.

The good news is that emotional strength can be learned.

Contrary to what many people believe, vulnerability is not weakness. In reality, it takes a hell of a lot of courage to be honest about what you’re feeling. It actually takes more strength to face emotional struggles directly instead of running from them. Emotional resilience is not about pretending nothing affects you; it’s about learning how to process challenges in a productive way.

For many men, opening up starts with small steps.

It might mean:

having one honest conversation

admitting stress instead of hiding it

reaching out for support

talking to a trusted friend

joining a supportive community

working with a coach or mentor

learning healthier emotional habits

Progress does not happen overnight, and emotional growth begins with honesty, starting with ourselves first. Sometimes we have to dial it all the way back, look ourselves in the mirror, and acknowledge that truth that we have been keeping from not only the world, but ourselves as well.

Men also need to understand that vulnerability and masculinity are not opposites. A strong man will experience fear, pain, insecurity, sadness, or emotional exhaustion, the same spectrum of emotions as our female counterparts. Acknowledging those emotions does not diminish strength — it builds self-awareness and emotional control.

One of the most damaging things many men believe is that they have to carry everything alone. While independence is valuable, isolation is not strength. Humans are built for connection, support, and communication. No amount of badass-ness replaces the need for real relationships and emotional honesty.

Opening up emotionally can improve every area of life:

relationships become deeper

communication improves

stress becomes easier to manage

confidence grows naturally

emotional resilience strengthens

mental health improves

Most importantly, men begin to feel less alone.

The world we now live in has created many pressures for men, but emotional suppression does not have to define our futures. More men are beginning to have honest conversations about mental health, vulnerability, purpose, and emotional well-being. That shift matters because it gives others permission to stop pretending we are fine when truly, we are struggling internally.

At the end of the day, emotional honesty is not about becoming weak or overly emotional. It is about becoming real. Remember- before you become that man you truly want to be, you have to allow yourself to be human first.

The strongest men are not the ones who never struggle. They are the ones willing to face themselves honestly, grow through adversity, and build meaningful connection instead of hiding behind silence.

The Modern Loneliness Problem Among Men

In a world in which humans are more connected - there seems to be a paradoxical epidemic among men: Loneliness.

Not the kind of loneliness that comes from physically being alone, but the deeper kind — feeling disconnected, misunderstood, and emotionally isolated even when surrounded by people. It’s becoming one of the biggest silent issues affecting men. Fueling addictions of all forms - Many don’t recognize it until it begins impacting their mental health, relationships, confidence, and overall quality of life.

For generations, we were taught to value strength, independence, and emotional control. While resilience and discipline are important traits, many men learned early on that vulnerability was weakness.

Imagine that your six year old son has fallen off of his bike - what would you tell him to do?

Imagine that your daughter of the same age has experienced the same - is your response to her different?

Most people would agree that the response to a boy would be a lot less validating of emotions, more encouraging of stoicism and more justification of our daughter’s pain - and this message is sent towards us in many different circumstances and occasions growing up.

As a result, emotional struggles often stay buried beneath work, distractions, social media, or unhealthy coping habits. The problem is that isolation doesn’t disappear just because it’s ignored.

The modern world has changed the way men connect with each other. Genuine conversations have been replaced with quick texts, social media scrolling, and surface-level interactions. Many men have hundreds of online connections but minimal amounts of meaningful relationships. Many of my clients spend days communicating virtually while still feeling completely alone.

Another factor contributing to loneliness is the pressure men place on themselves to perform. Society usually ties our worth to success, money, productivity, or status. When life feels uncertain or difficult, we withdraw instead of reaching out. Pride, fear of judgment, or the belief that “nobody cares anyway” keeps us from utilizing any other tools we have.

Chronic isolation has been linked to increased stress, anxiety, depression, poor sleep, lack of motivation, and physical health problems. Over time, loneliness can slowly drain confidence and make us feel disconnected from purpose and direction.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that loneliness only affects men who are single or socially isolated. In reality, many men in relationships, careers, and active social circles still experience deep emotional disconnection. You can have people around you and still feel like nobody truly knows what you’re carrying internally.

(many of my clients don’t realize that there is a difference between being alone and lonely:

Alone - you are physically alone in a any particular situation

Lonely - you can be in a room with one hundred people and still feel totally alone.

In my eyes, Loneliness is one’s inability to be there with themselves - in any situation.)

So what’s the solution? -It starts with honesty.

Men need spaces where we can speak openly without feeling weak. Genuine connection doesn’t come from pretending everything is fine — it comes from authenticity. Having just one trusted friend, mentor, coach, or support system can make all the difference in the world.

Building connection also requires intentional effort. Reaching out first, spending time in real conversations, joining communities, exercising, pursuing personal growth, and limiting excessive social media use can all help rebuild true connection, and small actions matter more than most people realize.

It’s also important for men to understand that asking for support is not weakness. It takes more strength to face internal struggles directly than it does to hide from them. Emotional resilience is not about suppressing feelings; it’s about learning how to process challenges in a healthy way.

The modern loneliness problem among men is real, but it is not permanent.

More of us are beginning to speak openly about mental health, our emotions and the importance of connection. This is huge. The more honest conversations we have, the easier it becomes for others to realize we are not alone in what we’re experiencing. The truth is: every man wants to feel seen, valued, understood, and connected. No amount of success can fully replace authentic human connection. Sometimes the strongest thing a man can do is stop pretending he has to carry everything alone.

Brainspotting

Many of us experience moments in life when it feels like something is holding us back, even when we can’t fully explain what it is. It can show up as anxiety, addiction, triggers, self-doubt, the whole spectrum of uncomfortable emotions or patterns that keep repeating no matter how hard we try to change. We may understand the problem logically, but still feel stuck.

That is where Brainspotting is incredibly powerful.

As a coach who also needs coaching, I have personally experienced the relief and clarity Brainspotting can provide, using it to process trauma, develop insight into myself, and remove internal barriers that stood between me and the life I wanted to build. It is one of the most powerful tools I have encountered, not only professionally, but personally as well.

You can describe the experience as finally getting beneath the surface - A lot of my clients are justifiably skeptical when I bring up the possibility of Brainspotting, requesting further information on why it is different from other approaches.

My response: we often judge our past selves (who were usually children and if not, less wise versions of ourselves) with the current brain we have - ex. A 40 year old man judging his 7 year old self negatively about the way he responded to an abusive caretaker. We usually lack compassion, empathy and kindness for ourselves with an unconscious assumption that we had the skills then that we do now. Brainspotting has allowed me space to revisit painful memories from a different lens, where I can process why and how things happen in a way that I can accept so that the beliefs that stem from these events don’t weigh me down in my day to day life.

So what the heck is Brainspotting?, you ask.

Brainspotting is a mind- body healing approach developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003. The idea behind it is simple but packs a punch: where you look affects how you feel.

During a Brainspotting session, the client focuses on a specific issue, emotion, memory, or goal while identifying an eye position, otherwise known as a “brainspot” — that connects to that experience in the brain and nervous system. By maintaining focus on that spot while staying present with thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations, the brain is able to process unresolved experiences at a deeper level.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting does not rely entirely on analyzing or explaining problems intellectually. Most talk therapy approaches cannot reach deep enough inside the brain, Brainspotting actually helps access the deeper parts where trauma, emotional pain, stress responses, and limiting beliefs are often stored.

Why Brainspotting Is Helpful

One of the reasons Brainspotting is so effective is because many of our struggles are not just “mental.” They live in our nervous system and body as well.

We can know we should feel confident and still feel fear.

We can want to move forward and still feel blocked.

We can understand our past and still carry its emotional weight.

Brainspotting can remove that blockade and pave the road towards self actualization.

What makes Brainspotting unique is that it allows the brain to process naturally instead of forcing outcomes. Often, breakthroughs come not from “trying harder,” but from creating enough safety and awareness for the nervous system to finally let go. One of the most powerful things about Brainspotting is that it is not only for trauma recovery. It can benefit almost anyone.

People use Brainspotting for:

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Addiction recovery

  • Performance anxiety

Brainspotting has been part of my own journey of growth, recovery, and self-awareness. It has helped me become more grounded, aware, and more aligned with the person I want to be.

Do I Need A Life Coach?

One of the most common questions I receive as a Professional Life Coach - How do I know this is for me? In my humble opinion, I believe everyone can use a little coaching at some point(s) in their life. Truthfully, it all boils down to what you would like to accomplish.

As many of you may already know, therapy is a process that must be done with a mental health professional to diagnose and treat mental health disorders, address traumas and unwanted behaviors - focusing more on the past and present - the “why” to develop insight and heal from those invisible scars we tend to sustain throughout life.

Coaching on the other hand may use some of the same techniques as a therapist, with a different focus. While still acknowledging the trauma and all that got us to this point, coaching focuses on the present and strategies to develop a future of our choosing - the “how”.
